Injury prevention in alpine skiing:
Security as a factor of success in alpine regions

The alpine skiing and all the connected economic and social activities are very important for the alpine regions which are integrated in this project. Experts of the areas of research, economy, technology research and health got together to improve the security and the comfort of sport equipment - especially of alpine skiing. Newest data (source: CSSCM) report that 76% of injuries are accidental falls, 12% of them are collisions of persons. 36% of the injuries are located at the knee, 13% at the shoulder, 8,8% at the head and 8% at the wrist, rest percentage at other parts of the body. Women get more often hurt than men, especially at the knee. Since 1970 there's a decrease of injuries whereas the number of severe injuries increased. Most of all there are injuries of the cruciate ligament (ACL), operations for reconstruction are very often necessary. The typical injuries in these sections are "Phantom-foot" and "Boot-induced-drawer" or exterior rotation with simultaneous spraining. Most of all skiers with less experience are affected. Also the comfort of ski boots the security of the practiced sport activity. For the ski boot the feeling in the foot is very important for the optimal control of the sport equipment. The lack of protection of the tooth of skiers also causes injuries at the skull which could be minimized with appropriate preventive measures which doesn't affect the comfort of skiing negatively.
